IDEA Book (Movie) Club - Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution

Date: Thursday, October 19, 2023

Time: 11:30am - 12:30pm (MDT) 12:30 - 1:30pm (CDT)

Description:

It's time for the next Book Club sponsored by the IDEA Committees of AFP Edmonton & Area and AFP Manitoba! It's a busy time of year for most of us so we decided to focus on a movie this time around.

Join us on Thursday October 19, 2023 as we discuss Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution currently streaming on Netflix.

A documentary from Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground Productions. Defiant, boisterous and at times shocking, Crip Camp a look back at Camp Jened (located in the Catskills in the US), which welcomed people with disabilities in the 1950s, 60s and 70s when many mainstream summer camps did not and in an era when people with disabilities were sent away to institutions simply because of their disabilities. Accompanied by historical footage from the camp, the film documents the revolutionary spirit that surrounded the camp, and the complex experiences of many of the campers – many of whom went on to be leaders in the disability rights movement in the United States.

Don't have Netflix? No problem! There is a great discussion about the film from the University of Chicago available on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emSCFnvZSI4on)

The book club is free to attend but you must register in advance!

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Meeting the Moment: Current and Future Philanthropic Trends

Thursday, October 19, 2023

Breakfast: 7:30 AM

Panel Discussion: 8:00 - 9:00 AM

From the global pandemic to climate change, war and political upheaval, the past few years have seen change on every front. As we are all deeply enmeshed in the ‘daily doing’ of our work, and it can be challenging to try to make sense of how philanthropy is evolving in response to larger societal forces. Yet it is important to slow down, take stock and try to answer the question: how can fundraising meet the moment? While challenges and uncertainties are ahead, there are also many reasons for hope and optimism for the charitable sector. How can we collaborate with donors, partners, and communities to realize the future we envision? In this session, KCI’s Susan Storey will offer insights that will challenge, inspire and perhaps even provoke change in how you and your organization are meeting the moment.

Learning Objectives:

 • Develop a detailed understanding of the 6 key trends currently impacting decision-makers in the non-profit sector.

 • Dive into examples and case studies from across the Canadian philanthropic landscape that amplify these learnings.

 • Be inspired to see themselves and fellow fundraisers as change-makers, meeting the moment and leading positive change for our communities.

About the Speaker:

Susan Storey, CFRE

Susan Storey is a Partner with KCI (Ketchum Canada Inc.) and a fundraising professional with more than 30 years’ experience. Her current work on behalf of KCI includes strategic counsel for studies and campaigns ranging from start-up to $500 million across Canada. In addition, Susan is involved in the creation of multi-year revenue generation plans that comprehensively evaluate potential across all fundraising channels including mass philanthropy, major and planned gifts, corporate giving and sponsorship, special events and social enterprise. Susan has been KCI’s lead consultant for projects in all sectors including arts and culture, education, health, environment, multi-level national and international charities and community-based social service organizations. She has been active with AFP for nearly three decades including serving as President of two Chapters, two terms on the AFP Global Board and as Chair of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Canada. Most recently Susan co-chaired a Working Group focused on defining actions for the fundraising profession in Canada related to Truth and Reconciliation.

IDEA Book Club: Biased: Uncovering the hidden bias that shapes what we see, think and do by Jennifer L Eberhardt

Description:

It’s time for the next Book Club sponsored by the IDEA* Committees of AFP Manitoba and AFP Edmonton & Area on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm CT (11:30am – 12:30pm MST).

This time we will examine Jennifer L Eberhardt’s book Biased: Uncovering the Hidden Prejudice That Shapes What We See, Think, and Do. It will give us a chance to become conscious of our own implicit biases in order to be more thoughtful about how we do our work as fundraising professionals and how we engage in daily interactions as human beings.

Eberhardt says that you don’t have to be racist to be biased. Unconscious bias can be at work without our realizing it, and even when we genuinely wish to treat all people equally. Ingrained stereotypes can infect our visual perception, attention, memory, and behavior. This has an impact on all aspects of society: education, employment, housing, criminal justice, and even fundraising. In Biased, Eberhardt brings a perspective that is at once scientific, investigative, and informed by personal experience. Jennifer Eberhardt offers us insights into the dilemma of bias and a path forward.

This is a great opportunity to connect with colleagues, and share thoughts/challenges/best practices around issues of IDEA in our work and life. All are welcome to the discussion (whether you’ve read the book or not).

And if you don’t like reading or don’t have time, check out this series of videos with the author on YouTube:

Between the COVID-19 pandemic, the ever-evolving definition of who and what is charity, and the re-examination of Canadians’ beliefs around issues like equity and reconciliation, it’s hard to think of a time when a greater number of transformative factors have affected fundraising and philanthropy in Canada. And while the pandemic has been an exhausting time for many of Canada’s charities, it has also been a period of significant growth, innovation and, in some instances, record setting fundraising results.

Where do we go from here? Join KCI Partner Susan Storey as she shares KCI ‘s latest thinking on readying your organization for the future. Informed by KCI’s 2022 Sector Series examining the ‘big issues’ impacting charities in each major sub-sector, this session will highlight the themes and strategies your organization should be focused on to move forward boldly in 2022 and beyond.

Join AFP Edmonton & Area Chapter for a one hour webinar led by Tanya Hannah Rumble on the five fallacies of fundraising that limit authentic relationships with donors. There are a number of harmful ‘best practices’ that we have been taught and continue to perpetuate in fundraising and philanthropy.

These five fallacies of fundraising are:

1. Wealth is built by the smartest and most capable people.

2. The donor is always right.

3. Donor centricity should trump everything else.

4. Beneficiaries are deficient and need a donor to save them.

5. Resources are scarce and we must fight each other for funding.

These ‘best practices’ deepen inequity, create harm, and weaken our effectiveness and happiness in our roles. They hold us back from real and authentic connections with our donors and hold us back from creating a relationship that invites the donor into the work in a meaningful way. They restrict our ability to make real and lasting change for our causes. In this session we will unlearn these practices and re-imagine philanthropy that is based on an anti-oppression practice, centers our communities, and is more effective at engaging and inspiring our donors.

Learning Objectives:

1. An opportunity to question your assumptions about the best practices in fundraising and philanthropy

2. Learn how donor centricity can damage relationships, be ineffective in raising money and making lasting change for your cause

3. Explore new ways to fundraising that are built on equity and authentic relationships

About the session:

Global Philanthropic Inc. (Canada) is proud to release the first in its series of Knowledge Creation reports: Connecting ROI and Prospect Research: A Report to the Canadian Non-Profit Sector by Igor Osipov, PhD.

This report provides a practical and evidence-based review of prospect research in Canadian philanthropy and how its value and return on investment is perceived in charitable organizations, both large and small. A key finding is prospect research showed both short and long-term value, during times of change, and for strategic, major gift and large campaigns. There is a clear connection between effective use of digital technologies and organizational fundraising capacity.

Even if you are not the person handling prospect research in your organization, here’s why YOU should attend:

 • Good prospect research makes you a better and more effective fundraiser

 • Information you need to argue for research money is right there in your organization’s database

 • The cost of research is peanuts compared to the potential returns.

Dr. Igor Osipov is an internationally recognized researcher, working for the past 20 years in leadership positions in digital science with Holtzbrinck and Writefull, as well as @Elsevier and PM Expert. Dr. Osipov joined Global Philanthropic as the Vice President of Knowledge Creation in the spring of 2020 and will lead the creation of new knowledge for the non-profit and fundraising sectors through research, producing world-class contributions to the sector each quarter.

Guy Mallabone, current President and CEO of Global Philanthropic Canada, will join Dr. Osipov in presenting the highlights from this report on March 17th to AFP Edmonton. Guy is a former member of the International AFP Board of Directors, and past recipient of the AFP Calgary chapter award for outstanding fundraising professional in 2011, and also from the Edmonton AFP chapter in 1999. He states, “In this report, research makes the clear link between investment in prospect research and overall fundraising success. Our goal with this series is to add important knowledge to the non-profit sector that will increase fundraisers’ capacity to reach their fundraising goals. We are looking at common issues through a new lens to add a fresh perspective to the fundraising toolbox.”

CFRE Refresher Course

Are you ready to write your CFRE Exam?

The AFP Edmonton & Area Chapter is pleased to host the AFP CFRE Refresher Course. The AFP CFRE Refresher Course offers development professionals an opportunity to review the main components of a complete fundraising program.

The AFP CFRE Refresher Course is presented through lecture, case studies, and the encouragement of participant dialogue. This course is worth 16 continuing education credits on your CFRE application. This two-day format asks you to apply fundraising theory, skills, and techniques within the six knowledge domains of the field, based on experience at the three to five year level. AFP highly recommends that the refresher course be just one of the resources you use in preparing to take the CFRE exam. Your study should also include reading books that appear on the CFRE Resource Reading List. For more information on pursuing your CFRE certifications, please visit www.cfre.org.

Domains include:

 • Current & Prospective Donor Research

 • Securing the Gift

 • Relationship Building

 • Volunteer Involvement

 • Leadership & Management

 • Ethics, Accountability, and Professionalism

Note

Participation in the AFP CFRE Refresher Course may assist you in learning or reviewing concepts covered on the Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) examination as detailed on the Test Content Outline provided by CFRE International. However, the AFP CFRE Refresher Course is not designed specifically as a prep course for the exam. It is designed to provide a review of concepts one should know at the five-year experience level. AFP highly recommends that the review course be just one of the resources you use in preparing to take the CFRE exam. Your study should also include reading books that appear on the CFRE Resource Reading List.

More specifically, the AFP CFRE Refresher Course focuses on both:

 • refreshing the fundraising knowledge a professional already has, and

 • identifying and helping to fill in gaps in fundraising knowledge.

So, this Course is a most important step in the process of preparing for the CFRE Exam. However – avoid relying solely on this Course and this manual during your exam preparation! Successful candidates often participate in follow up study groups and spend time on their own studying for the exam. CFRE International provides a number of excellent resources, including a candidate handbook, the test-content outline, and a list of reading resources (also provided as handouts as a part of the Refresher Course), available at www.cfre.org/resources/handbooks. A practice exam is also available on a subscription basis for periods of either 30 or 90 days: www.cfre.org/practice-exam. The practice exam does not provide the answers to the exam questions one will face; rather, it primarily helps one understand how the questions are asked and the degree of difficulty involved. We encourage participants to take advantage of these additional resources!

This course will be offered virtually. Zoom log in details will be sent to all registered participants when registration closes and hard copy participant handbooks will be mailed to the address provided upon registration.

Don’t forget!

AFP Edmonton & Area Chapter is proud to offer the CFRE Refresher Course Award for all eligible AFP members who plan to attend this session.
Visit the Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries page for more information and to apply before October 22!

About the session:

While we definitely aren't out of the woods yet, it's fair to say there are numerous signals pointing to better days on the horizon.

Combined with an accelerating vaccine rollout, we are increasingly hearing that Canadians are holding unprecedented levels of savings, and numerous measures of consumer confidence indicate that our itch to get out and spend is greater today than at any time since 2018. All of this adds credibility to the theory that, just like at the end of the 1918 pandemic, we are heading towards another 'Roaring Twenties' - a time of significant economic growth, technological progress, widespread prosperity, and social, artistic, and cultural dynamism.

But what about the charitable sector? What will this period of growth and prosperity mean for fundraising in general? How do we prepare to be ready to take full advantage of it? What should we be doing today, tomorrow and in the weeks and months to come?

In other words ... Now what?

About the speaker:

Susan Storey, CFRE is a highly respected development professional with 30 years' experience directing fundraising programs at some of Canada's most notable charitable organizations. A Partner with KCI, her current work includes strategic counsel for studies and campaigns ranging from start-up to $500 million. In addition, Susan is involved in the creation of multi-year revenue generation plans that comprehensively evaluate potential across all fundraising channels including mass philanthropy, major and planned gifts, corporate giving and sponsorship, special events and social enterprise. Susan has been KCI's lead consultant for projects in all sectors including arts and culture, education, health, environment, multi-level national and international charities and community-based social service organizations.

CHARITABLE INTERESTS: Committed to improving lives and creating better communities, Susan has donated her time to a variety of organizations including serving at the local, national and international levels for the Association of Fundraising Professionals. She currently serves on the AFP Global Board, is a past President of two Canadian Chapters (Manitoba, Greater Toronto) and is Chair for the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Canada.

Leaders within non-profit organizations spend a great deal of time and energy ensuring that their organization’s mission and vision are communicated widely and accurately. While that approach is effective to build trust within your community, a more personalized approach must be taken when building individual donor relationship. Instead of communicating to donors and prospects, we must listen and communicate with them to be most effective and to ultimately reach out goal.

Learn to combat conversational narcissism using research discussed in Malcom Gladwell’s Talking To Strangers and Kate Murphy’s You’re Not Listening: What You’re Missing and Why It Matters. This session will highlight what is known about
effective communication skills and discuss how to apply that information to cultivation, solicitation and stewardship within the donor pipeline.

In this workshop, participants will ...

 • Review qualified research about effective listening skills that builds trust with donors;

 • Examine common misconceptions about effective communication skills, both in general and in relation to donors;

 • Discuss strategic questions to pose to donors that will result in stronger relationships;

 • Discover how to read emotions and reactions and how to handle rejection;

 • Learn how to use effective storytelling to communicate the organization’s mission and vision;

 • Develop appropriate strategies for prospect pool management for gift officers, board members and organizational leadership.
